so it's another boring day in Policy Development 300, having a discussion on the values and perspectives that play a role in the policy creation process. our example...Biotechnology and food production. So things are going great until the token green peace advocate pipes in with, "well, why don't you all stop shopping at safeway and buy organic?" oh, i don't know...maybe because we don't have a fortune to spend on groceries...or maybe because we don't have a problem with foods containing higher vitamin and nutrient content...and then there's the whole thing about helping impoverished communities. somehow...i'm not exactly sure where this comes from...but somehow she seems to think that poorer families would do better to pay $5 for their organically grown rice than to pay like, $2 for regular (or enriched) rice. Technologically enhanced foods are created to help give people the nutrients that they can't afford to get from other more expensive foods! now don't get me wrong, my roommate eats organic and i think it's just fine and dandy, but i really really dislike being preached to about things that i don't personally value...and i could really care less if chemicals were used to grow my carrots or if my rice has a yellow tint, thank you very much. I could not find parking at all this morning...i guess that's the price i pay for not getting a pass, but i finally got a spot way the heck over by whyte which is only about a 15-20 min. walk to my class so it wasn't too bad. AND it's really nice out today so i was able to enjoy a little bit of sunshine this morning...not that it's exactly warm but it is fall... i'm doing pretty good at keeping my mind occupied, eh? ....until now. DARN IT! umm, so i have this paper to write for my Material Culture class...i have to write about what i would take as my "luxury" item on survivor, and why. and then i have to find books that back up my choice...but that's just silly because how am i supposed to find a book about my teddy bear?! haha, that's not actually my choice, i haven't decided yet...although, that might not be a bad idea. hmm...
